Raffles Institution Primary Mathematics World Contest 2017


The general objective of the Raffles Institution Primary Mathematics World Contest (RIPMWC) is to increase interest in Mathematics and to develop problem solving ability through a friendly Mathematics contest amongst Primary School pupils.


Specifically, the aims are as follows:

1.         To highlight the importance of Mathematics.

2.         To give primary school pupils an opportunity to discover their talent in Mathematics.

3.         To benchmark pupil’s Mathematics standards on a national platform.

The deadline for submission of registration is Thursday, 2 February 2017



Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools 2017


Hwa Chong Institution will be hosting the annual Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary Schools (SMOPS) 2017.

 

The aim of the SMOPS is to generate greater interest in Mathematics among pupils in primary schools. It is also an excellent opportunity for our pupils to identify and explore their talent in Mathematics.

 

Interested applicants may contact their Math teachers for further details.

The deadline for submission of registration is Thursday, 2 February 2017.


Thinking@Play

Thinking@Play is an initiative aimed at providing the students with an opportunity to play mathematics-related games. Thinking@Play sessions are conducted every Tuesday and Thursday during the various recesses. Responses from the students have been very good and they look forward to being the sessions.

Math Week (Primary 3 to 6)

Math Week was conducted in Term 3 for our Primary 3 to Primary 5 students. During this week, the Math lessons were dedicated to engaging and challenging our students with more thought provoking Math questions as well as higher order thinking questions through the various activities conducted.


Math Day (Primary 1 to 2)

Math Day was conducted in Term 2 for our Primary 1 and 2 students. The highlight of Math Day was the Mental Sums Challenge which the students enjoyed. The students were also given the opportunity to experience the various Math-related activities which was conducted in various parts of the school premises.

Sharing Sessions with Parents

The Mathematics Department conducted sharing sessions for our students’ parents to enable them to keep abreast of what their children are learning in school and also to equip and enable them to better guide their children. The sharing sessions conducted this year are:
  • Fun in Math (Primary 1)
  • Model Drawing (Primary 2)
  • Sharing Session with Parents on Assessments (Primary 2)
  • Primary 6 Parents Math Briefing


Sharing Sessions with Visitors

The Math Department hosted some overseas visitors which enabled us to exchange pedagogical ideas on teaching and learning as well as best practices which the schools have. We are honoured to have hosted the following overseas visitors in 2014:
  • 2 teachers from Avery-Parsons Elementary in Colorado, USA
  • 1 teacher from Rahway Public Schools in New Jersey, USA
  • Teachers from The Japanese School Singapore
